FIFA World Cup 2026: Full Group Breakdown

World Cup 2026 is the first tournament to feature 48 teams. Previous editions included 32 participants, but FIFA approved an expanded competition that adds 16 more nations to the final tournament.
The opening stage consists of 12 groups with 4 teams in each. Every team plays 3 matches and earns points under the standard system: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a defeat.

The expansion also changes the qualification process. Group winners and runners-up move directly into the knockout bracket, while the 8 best third-placed teams also advance.
That system creates a 32-team knockout field. From there, teams must progress through the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals to reach the final.

A total of 104 matches are scheduled across the tournament, compared with 64 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The final group lineup was confirmed after the World Cup draw and the completion of the qualifying campaign. Each group contains 4 nations.

The opening round has already produced several notable results, while a number of decisive group-stage fixtures are still ahead for BC Game India users. Germany recorded the biggest win of the tournament so far, the Netherlands dropped points against Japan, and several groups remain completely open after the first set of matches.

• Mexico vs South Korea (Group A): Mexico and South Korea both started with victories. Mexico beat South Africa 2-0, while South Korea edged Czechia 2-1. Their meeting on 18 June will put the top 2 teams in the group head-to-head.
• United States vs Australia (Group D): The United States made a strong start with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Australia also collected 3 points after a 2-0 win against Türkiye. When the teams meet on 19 June, first place in Group D could be at stake.
• Germany vs Côte d’Ivoire (Group E): Germany opened its campaign with a 7-1 victory over Curaçao, the largest margin of victory seen so far at World Cup 2026. Côte d’Ivoire also picked up 3 points after a 1-0 win against Ecuador. Their match on 20 June will decide which side takes control of Group E.
• Netherlands vs Japan (Group F): One of the most entertaining matches of the opening round ended 2-2. Neither team managed to secure all 3 points, which leaves Group F wide open ahead of the remaining fixtures.
• Spain vs Uruguay (Group H): Spain and Uruguay do not meet until the final round of group-stage matches on 26 June. With both nations expected to challenge for qualification, that fixture could play a major role in determining the final standings.
• France vs Senegal (Group I): Group I begins on 16 June, with France and Senegal facing each other in the opening match. Both countries are widely viewed as the strongest teams in the group.
• Portugal vs Colombia (Group K): Portugal and Colombia are scheduled to meet on 27 June. By then, qualification places in Group K may still be undecided, which adds extra significance to the fixture.
• England vs Croatia (Group L): England and Croatia open their campaigns against one another on 17 June. The result will give one side an early advantage in what looks like one of the most competitive groups in the tournament.

The route to the knockout stage is more open than in previous World Cups.
Teams that finish first or second in their groups qualify automatically. Across 12 groups, that produces 24 knockout-stage places.
The remaining 8 spots are awarded to the best third-placed teams. Because of that rule, qualification can still be achieved without a top-two finish.

Group standings are determined by points. If teams finish level, FIFA uses goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head results to separate them.
Once the Round of 32 begins, the format changes completely. A draw after 90 minutes leads to extra time and, if required, a penalty shootout. The winner advances, and the losing side exits the tournament.
